 The Oracle script writing of "田" is, which is composed of border of farm land  and  is to mean the horizontal ridges and is to mean the vertical ridges.
When it came to later stage of Oracle script,   was already simplified to , no difference from what we are using now - "田".

So "田" means farm land.  and "田" is also extended to mean the landscape of the similar formation, which produces products like salt, gas and etc.

"田" is now also a surname of Chinese.
